This week I was able to sit down and speak with each of the Republican candidates. Needless to say they were all busy at work with the debate quickly approaching. Each campaign is currently doing everything they possibly can to help their candidate prepare before Friday. This Fridays debate is so instrumental for those running because it is their formal "debut" as a possible representative for District 10. How they present themselves, and how they represent their campaign during this debate will set the standard and the course for the whole election process.
Of course there will be countless changes and surprises along the way but first impressions count. After talking with these three men I can say without a doubt, they will make a big first impression. What kind of impression that will be, I have absolutely no idea.
I was able to sit down with Barrett Chambers and talk to him about his campaign and more specifically his platform. He is running with the campaign slogan, "Red, White, and Barrett '.50 Cal'" Mr. Chambers is the only candidate running who has shown a major interest in America's Second Amendment right. He believes that, "Every American has the right to bear arms based on second amendment. This right can't be taken away and everyone should have the right to protect themselves. However, we must end the gun show loophole so that everyone goes through the proper legal process to get one." Though he says that "we must end the gun show loophole," Mr. Chambers does not offer or propose a solution to the issue. But that goes with saying that neither JP Hefner or Sid Rao offer one either. Neither one of them even mention the Gun Show loophole issue, JP Hefner states, "I support to the 2nd Amendment. Americans have a right to bear arms as a means of self defense."
Although Mr. Hefner has not discussed anything on the topic of the Gun Show Loop hole, he has at least addressed the Second Amendment. Mr. Chambers and Mr. Hefners' running mate Sid Rao mentions nothing regarding the protection of the Second Amendment right in his campaign platform. In fact he never even says wether or not he's a supporter of it. Some have been arguing that he's proposing an alternative...His platform states, " Every citizen is required to have 5 loaded guns at all times."
Mr. Hefner out of all the candidates that I have spoken with, has elaborated his platform the most. While speaking with me he touched on the topic of gender equality and stressed his concern and heartbeat behind that issue. "Gender Equality in the state of Texas, that is one of the major aspects of my campaign. Especially the protection of women in light of the Baylor scandal... we're going to do something about this..."
The other candidates touched on this issue briefly.. Mr. Rao simply said, "This campaign likes to keep things in the traditionalist way of life..." He didn't elaborate. His campaign platform does not discuss gender equality he has written, "We, as Conservative Tea Party members, know that there are only 2 genders."
This Fridays three main debate topics are Gender Equality, Minimum Wage, and Immigration. We already know Mr. Rao's stance on immigration... "Alienate the Aliens. Eradicate the illegals, Undocumented, immigrants hurt our nation. Legal immigration will be heavilly vetted." His opposing republican candidates have taken very different stances... Mr. Chambers has taken a more middle of the road approach to his stance. This was extremely obvious to me in the time I spent with him, I say this based off of his responses and his attitude toward the issue.
The candidate that stood out the most on the topic of immigration was Mr. JP Hefner. He said "America is a melting pot... We're all immigrants...I do believe in stronger borders but I am not in support of turning the US into an isolated nation." Is this stance the most beneficial to the United States when it comes to foreign policy and our interaction with the rest of the world?
Over all going into this debate I am expecting the Hefner Campaign to show their strength and stand out from their fellow Republican candidates. Mr. Hefner although not a completely traditional Republican candidate, is a strong conservative representative in the running for District 10.
